New York University is the largest independent private research university in the U.S., encompassing 20 schools, colleges and divisions, including the highly regarded Stern School of Business and Tisch School of the Arts.
Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, NYU has expanded overseas, with comprehensive degree-granting liberal arts campuses in Abu Dhabi and Shanghai and study away sites and programs in Accra, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Florence, London, Prague, Sydney and Tel Aviv, among others.As of fall 2017, minorities and international students made up 63% of the undergraduate student body. More than 45 faculty members have won Guggenheim Fellowships since 2008, and 68 students have been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Commencement is held at Yankee Stadium, and alumni include 36 Nobel Laureates, four Fields medalists, more than 30 Pulitzer Prize winners, more than 35 Academy Award winners, and hundreds of members of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.
Alumni include Alan Greenspan, Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, directors Martin Scorsese and Spike Lee, writer Judy Blume and comedian and writer Donald Glover. Woody Allen was a motion picture production major at NYU, but he flunked out his freshman year.
